Gionee isn’t a brand very well known in India but they are trying to get a hold in the market by launching good device. Just a few months back they launched two powerful devices at a good price. The first device in question here is the Gionee Elife E3 which is a low end quad core device with a semi HD display while the other one is the Gionee Elife E6 which is a powerful quad core device with a full HD display. We take a closer look at both these device and here is what we have to say about both these devices.
The Gionee E3 has a rubberized exterior which feels good to hold and prevents the device from slipping off your hand. It is rounded on the edges and the size is just right for one handed operations. It has a 4.7 inch display and three capacitive keys below it. You will find the power and volume keys on the right spine of the device. The USB port and headphone jack sit on top of the device. The polycarbonate back panel of this device can be removed to access the battery. The device is very slim at just 7.9 mm and they have kept the weight down at just 110 gms. This works very well in favor of handling.
The Gionee Elife E6 feels a bit boxy when compared to the E3. It has a slightly larger display at 5 inches and has a simple rectangular design. The built quality is good and one might easily mistake it for a high end device. It uses a micro SIM card which goes in the left spine in a tray. This device is slightly heavy at 128 gms but still that is very light for a device this big. It is very slim with thickness of just over 6 mm. Like the E3, it has the audio jack on top and the volume keys on right. They have put the power key on top which makes it a bit uncomfortable to use as you have to extend your finger across the entire length of device.
The Gionee Elife E3 has got a 4.7 inch display which has a semi HD resolution. The display is quite good and would not fail to impress you. It is an IPS display with excellent colour replication. The contrast ratios are very good and it is the same story with viewing angles. No complaints against the display at all. It makes watching videos a great experience and the images are very crisp.
The display on Gionee Elife E6 is even better. It has got a 5 inch full HD unit so the pixel density goes past 440 ppi. It is also an IPS display like the E3, but better. It is larger and has a higher resolution so you get more space to play around. Watching videos is an even better experience and so is browsing. Everything on this display is ultra-crisp. You might have some trouble using this display in bright sunlight if you are used to AMOLED displays but otherwise it is good. You can easily put it against some high end devices.
The Gionee Elife E3 runs a low end quad core processor with a maximum clock speed of 1.2 GHz. It is coupled with 1 GB of RAM. It has got 16 GB of inbuilt storage which is plenty for many people. If it isn’t enough for you, it has an option to add a micro SD card of capacity up to 32 GB. It gets an 1800 mAh battery.
The Elife E6 runs a relatively powerful hardware with the processor clock speed being 1.5 GHz. Also the RAM is 2 GB instead of the 1 GB on E3. This one gets an inbuilt storage of 32 GB and there is no option to add a micro SD card. This one has a relatively larger battery of 2000 mAh.
The Elife E3 gets an 8 megapixel camera which is quite good. The outdoor shots are good and the colours are replicated well. If you try capturing indoors, you can have some good shots too if the lighting is good. The colours are saturated and with minor Photoshop tweaks, you can obtain some really good images. It has a 2 megapixel front camera. The E6 has got a higher resolution camera. It has a 13 megapixel camera which can record videos in full HD. The still photos are good like the E3 and the higher resolution means that you get more detail. The front camera has a resolution of 5 megapixel.
On connectivity front, you get similar features on both the devices. They include 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 2.0. The Elife E3 is a dual SIM device while the E6 is a single SIM device. I personally prefer single SIM devices but there is no doubt that dual SIM is a convenience.
Both the device runs android Jelly Bean 4.2 which has been heavily skinned. It has the feel of MIUI with few exceptions. The hardware on both the device is good enough to run this operating system smooth. Though you might encounter minor jitters or lags in performance but that might just be because of the modified software.
The software has got multiple themes that you can use but sadly you are limited to just six themes. If you don’t like the themed launcher, you can go for some other neat launcher that works well for you. You can also find the stock android launcher or maybe the launcher from some other manufacturer over the internet.
Both these devices are quite impressive and the only drawback was battery life. They have cut down on battery capacities in their attempts to keep the weight and thickness down. The E3 is available for as low as 14K which is a decent price for this device. It feels premium as compared to the other device you get for this price. The E6 however is a bit overpriced at around 21K and we would suggest looking at alternatives for similar hardware.
